Finca La Celia ha obtenido la certificación Fairtrade

Monday May 23rd, 2011

May 2011.- Fairtrade is a rapidly growing international movement that seeks to secure better treatment for farmers and workers in the developing world.

The Fairtrade seal is an independent guarantee that a product has been certified according to the international Fairtrade standards. Fairtrade certified products carry a Fairtrade mark on their label. The purchase of these products contributes to the mprovement of the workers’ living and working conditions and to the promotion of environmental protection.

Finca La Celia has been certified as a Fairtrade Producer, which means that not only is the company qualified to sell Fairtrade products, but also that, by producing certified grapes, it is entitled to receive a premium on the sale of its products. This money gets back to vineyard and winery workers in the form of community projects. The workers themselves offer suggestions on the use of the Fairtrade premium, and they decide, through their General Assembly, which social improvement actions the money from the sale of Fairtrade wine cases will be invested in. These actions will benefit them as well as their communities.

In order to obtain the Fairtrade certification, Finca La Celia has been assessed according to the following two standards:

1. Generic Fairtrade Standard for Hired Labor (divided in three parts):

– Social Development: potential for development, training, the right to nondiscrimination, freedom of work, equitable working conditions, medical assistance and workers’ safety (it coincides to a great extent with the requirements of the OHSAS 18001 standard, under which Finca La Celia has been certified since 2006).

– Environmental Development: management of agrochemical products, soil, water, fire and waste (it coincides to a great extent with the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard, under which Finca La Celia has been certified since 2004).

– Economic Development: creation of the Joint Body and training of its members in the management of the premium from the sale of Fairtrade products. This committee is made up of both representatives of the management and representatives of the workers, who are elected by members of each sector.

2. Generic Fairtrade Trade Standards:

These standards include documentary traceability requirements, the compliance of which serves as support for both the production and the commercial cycle and ensures transparency in the commercial management of Fairtrade products.

From its early beginnings, Finca La Celia has been committed to helping build sustainable communities for its workers. The recently obtained Fairtrade certification further enhances our commitment.

Our wines express a unique terroir in the world and are the result of their makers’ commitment to quality and to the winemaking tradition. Each of our wines holds in its essence the deep bond between man and the soil, and is carefully designed to convey the respect and charm involved in that bond.
